As soon as we arrive on Elena’s doorstep and she opens the door for us, tears start to well up in my eyes. She wraps her arms around Lennie and me, holding us tightly.

“Come inside, my loves,” she whispers after letting go, and ushers us into her home.

The familiar scent of warm cinnamon fills the air, instantly calming my racing thoughts. She guides us to the living room, where a crackling fire dances in the hearth. I know Elena wouldn’t usually light it in the middle of spring, but she wants me to feel cozy and comforted. I feel so touched. This is just like Elena, always thinking of others, always there for her friends.

“I’ve already prepared the guest room for the two of you. Hannah, how about you rest here and I take Lennie to bed? She’s barely awake.”

“Thank you.” I pull my legs up on the couch, and watch as she carries Lennie up the stairs. When she comes back down, she heads to the kitchen and brings us both a cup of tea.

“Where’s Darius?” I ask, taking the mug from her.

Elena sits down next to me. “Fast asleep. He went to bed early because he has a full day of clients tomorrow.” She takes a sip, her eyes glancing toward the flickering flames. “What happened, Hannah?”

Lowering the mug to the coffee table, I take a deep breath before speaking. “I think I need something stronger than tea, Elena, honestly.”

She responds to my wry smile with a chuckle and then goes to fetch us both a glass of wine, while I gather my thoughts.

I take a big gulp before I finally tell her. “Nathan happened.”

“What do you mean?”

“I saw a side to him that I’ve never seen before. He became violent, unpredictable. It was as if a switch flipped inside him.” I swallow hard before continuing. “Elena, I actually think he might have done it. I think he did hit Lennie. Or he lost his temper in a way that really, really scared her. I don’t know what I’m going to do now, but I have to keep her safe.”
